The Smashing Pumpkins have confirmed that they have received “over 10,000” applications to be their new guitarist.
Early this month, Smashing Pumpkins launched open auditions for a new guitarist following the recent departure of Jeff Schroeder.
“The Smashing Pumpkins are in search of an additional guitarist. The application process is open to anyone who might be interested. Applicants may submit a resume and related materials to: [email protected],” said a post on social media.
Just two weeks after launching the open auditions, the band said they have “received over 10,000 submissions for the position of an additional guitarist”. The band added that “there are 8 people working full-time to review each and everyone.”
Schroeder, a longtime Smashing Pumpkins guitarist, announced the “difficult decision” to leave the band in October.
“Although it was a very difficult decision to make, I’ve decided to leave the band to make some space to explore a slightly different path,” Schroeder then said in a statement. “I wish the band all the success in the future. I will be watching and listening.”
In the farewell statement, Schroeder revealed that joining the band happened when he least expected it. Schroeder recorded with the Pumpkins on every album since their reunion album Zeitgeist.
The band currently consists of founding members Billy Corgan, James Iha and Jimmy Chamberlin.
